The Most Simple Piece of Advice Ever

The Most Simple Piece of Advice Ever

Now, I’m not talking about making huge gestures or changes to drastically change your life for the better. This post is about one super, simple, thing you could do to make your daily life easier, more productive, and positive.

Just do it.

You’re probably thinking to yourself ‘Hey! That’s the Nike slogan!’ and yes, you’re totally right. But I don’t mean go out and run a 10K right now or drink Gatorade until you sweat colors. I mean, do it.

Whatever it is that is on your mind right now. Simply, DO. IT.

Maybe not huge life changes

I’m the type who overthinks e-v-e-r-y-thing. And of course you have to think about the consequences and benefits of your next move. And I definitely don’t wanna be held accountable for something completely life-altering. So, start small and simple.

Is there something in your room that every time you see it you think, ‘I should throw that away.’

Do you keep passing by the sink thinking, ‘Man, I should wash the dishes.’

Do little ideas keep popping up like ‘Maybe I should cut my hair,’ or ‘I have to buy x, y, z.’

The answer is super simple. Just do it!

Instead of being reminded every single time you pass by that specific item, or the sink, or you look at your hair…just take care of it!

Have you ever realized how much our brains think? If something keeps triggering it to think a specific thought, we should give our brain a break!

Wash those dishes, find a hairstyle and cut your hair, or go buy what you need to buy. It’s as simple as that.

It’s SO much better to actually do it and get it over with, than to keep reminding yourself to do it and get it over with. If you take care of it right then and there, you don’t have to waste anymore time thinking about it. You can spend your precious time and brain-space on other more important things (like those life-changing decisions).

The benefits of just doing it

If you take care of simple tasks like this around your house, office, and daily life, you will feel:

  • SO much better, first off. Like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders
  • Liberated. Because there is something less on your endless to-do list
  • Productive. Because accomplishing little tasks throughout your day will make you feel like you’re on your A-game
  • Positive. You’re brain will be less cluttered, in turn, making you a happier person when you come home, or go to your office, or get into a clean car (you know you have to wash that thing!)

Try it out, I promise you it works. Now…

If you DO wan’t something more life-changing…

And are ready to take it to the next level…then mentally declutter.

This whole idea is a bit of a twist from a TEDx talk I watched a few months ago.

Sarah Knight speaks about The Magic of Not Giving a F*ck, and she is A GENIUS. Honestly, her video doesn’t talk about anything like what I wrote in this post, but it’s what sparked my “Just do it attitude”.

She talks about how we have to look at our time, energy, and money, like ‘F*cks.’ If we don’t care about something, we shouldn’t spend our time, energy, or money on it — in other words, give no f*cks.

Her main point that got me thinking, was when she gives the example of attending a party she doesn’t want to go to. We say yes to invitations because we feel obligated to go, and guilty if we don’t go. But because we do this, we end up spending much more energy and time on something we can easily just say no to from the beginning.

We spend time thinking, ‘Damn, I really don’t want to go to this thing.’ and we spend time coming up with excuses to get out if it. Then we waste time feeling bad about the excuses we use. Or, if we’re unlucky enough to get out of the situation, we end up dreading it and waiting for it to be over.

Sarah says, if you just say no from the beginning, you don’t have to waste any more time or energy (or money in some cases) worrying about it.

And that’s when I had my ‘Oulah!’ moment.

If I spend less energy and time worrying about things over and over by just getting it done in the first place — my life would be SO much easier.

I know that’s not really Sarah’s point (and I think her actual point is simply genius) but she helped me with something so simple, easy, and satisfying.

If you have the chance to listen to her TEDx talk, DO IT. She makes it super entertaining and will definitely make you laugh. Maybe you will also have your own ‘Oulah!’ moment.

What do you think about this simple piece(s) of advice? Do you have any other life tips?

This bit of advice has actually been helpful when I’m battling depression. Not giving myself any time to think about doing something and just getting up and doing it – sometimes helps! Great advice!
