My Favorite Quotes of the Year (2017)

Who doesn’t love a good quote? Quotes are magical — like music. They’re relatable, inspirational, and make you feel like getting up and kicking butt. They also make so much sense in this weird thing we call life. Every year we go through different ups and downs, but for some reason quotes can really help us push through. Please tell me I’m not the only one. Here are my top favorite quotes of the year that have helped me in one way or another:

“You’re not required to set yourself on fire to keep others warm”

-Unknown

There are so many times I go out of my way to do things for people who don’t appreciate it or wouldn’t do the same for me (check the quote below). Sometimes you just have to do your own thing and realize who is worth investing in and who isn’t.

“Stop crossing oceans for people who wouldn’t jump puddles for you”

-Unknown

(Read the quote description above)

“Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes, but when you look back everything is different”

– C.S. Lewis

This is what I think every day, but in the reverse. Every day goes by slowly, but a year as a whole goes by so quickly. This quote just makes you look back and realize that everything adds up. So if you’re planning on making a change, reaching a goal, or doing something — start today.

“We are very good lawyers for our own mistakes, but very good judges for the mistakes of others”

-Nicky Gumbel

This is a great quote when you find yourself judging people or thinking that you know everything. Everyone has a different life, everyone thinks differently, and everyone handles situations based on their own information and contributing factors. Just because you would handle a situation differently or you think you know how someone should act or what they should do — doesn’t mean you’re right.

“Never get so busy making a living, that you forget to make a life”

-Dolly Parton

Moving to Spain has taught me this because the work-life balance in Spain is so good compared to the States (at least in California). In the U.S. the culture is very much “work-to-live and live-to-work” and it definitely shouldn’t be like that (in my opinion).

“Sometimes you need to burn bridges to stop yourself from crossing them again”

-Unknown

You don’t have to please everyone, and if that means not talking to them again, then by all means – go for it. I’ve learned how to get rid of toxic people in my life, and I wouldn’t want to have it any other way.

“When something goes wrong, yell ‘Plot Twist!’ and move on”

-Unknown

My favorite part about this quote is that it’s super light-hearted. It keeps a positive energy around a not-so-good/unexpected situation — which is a great way to be. Staying positive, will only bring more positivity to you — so just yell ‘Plot Twist!’

“When everything seems like an uphill battle, just think of the view from the top”

-Unknown

Great motivational quote to keep on moving. Don’t see the progress just yet? Keep it up, make it a habit, improve, and then look back. I guarantee you’ll see the progress after. Be it with school, with work, with your blog (ahem *note to self*), or even with personal goals. Everything requires time, patience, and persistence. Just keep your head up!

“Don’t waste time explaining who you are to people committed to misunderstanding you”

-Shannon L. Adler

This quote goes hand-in-hand with a few quotes from above. Can you tell I was dealing with someone difficult this year? Anyway, this is a great quote for realizing that some people are just not worth your time. If they don’t see the good in you, are constantly putting you down, or are a bit “fake” with you, then definitely move along without them — you’ll be MUCH better off.

“Your energy introduces you before you even speak”

-Unknown

Going along with all of the positive vibes…your energy can be felt when you enter a room, when you’re speaking with people, when you’re by yourself. Energy is transferable and that is how people can feel if you are in a good mood or not. Don’t go faking your mood either — but if there is anything I’ve learned this year, it’s to be as positive as you can be at all times. Make that your goal and habit.

“If you’ve made your point, stop talking”

-Unknown

These quotes have helped me throughout the year and hopefully they can help or relate to you in some way. Although this is my all-time favorite quote in the whole wide world:

“Don’t take life too seriously. You’ll never get out alive.”

-Elbert Hubbard
